Ghetto Film School

Ghetto Film School is a project originated in the South Bronx to bring film and arts education to an underserved community. For this project we have been designing for the Ghetto Film School's Los Angeles location. The school provides an introductory education program for high school students as well as support for the next generation of writers and directors entering the film industry by allowing them to use their facilities, providing talent development sessions and networking events. The grounds of the school are simultaneously used by students as well as in part by the public.

The objective of this project for me was to create a safe and inspiring environment to its film students. Smooth circulation on the steep slope of the site was created by having little alleys that lead up to the central courtyard that contains an underground semi - outdoor screening pit. While designing the project, I was channeling abstract historical references of Hollywood cinema to create a cinematic and inspiring experience to the students and visitors.

On just under 31,000 square feet the school provides, next to educational and hospitality spaces, two sound stages as well as two screening rooms and an exhibition space. A hybrid structure made of steel and cross laminated timber acts as the skeleton for the one to two story buildings. Glass fiber reinforced concrete panels together with titanium zinc panels will clad most of the exterior.

Ghetto Film School (Design Development)

Through Design Development course, this project went through further development that we worked on as a team of 11. I was fortunate to have my project chosen and had an opportunity to work as a large group and lead a very energetic collaboration. Different tasks were assigned to each student in the team. As a result, the project achieved an advanced level of development from detailed plans and sections to specific material finishes. Design Development is a rigorous course that allowed us to dive deeper into the realm of construction and project development, and required us to come up with highly efficient workflows as a team.
